Troy, New York (Feb. 13, 2025) - Council President Sue Steele issued the following statement in response to the mayor’s 2025 State of the City address:
“While there were several positive developments for the Collar City in 2024, our city also faces many serious problems that cannot be glossed over. We constantly hear from residents concerned with crime, noise, and other neighborhood-level complaints. Others cannot get a return phone call from the mayor’s office for the simplest of questions. We need a city hall that is responsive to our residents, not one that is focused on patting itself on the back.
“It’s been no secret that the city has struggled to retain staff in key positions across every department. Record vacancies continue to force staff to do more with less, and we see its cumulative impact on each neighborhood. Instead, we must invest in our workforce and direct resources to support essential services that residents deserve—something that should be prioritized over buying a new city hall building.
“The Council Democratic caucus will continue to hold the administration accountable for missed deadlines for financial reports and skyrocketing costs exceeding $300,000 for outside consultants to help run the city’s day-to-day fiscal operations. We also must accelerate our lead pipe replacement efforts. Completing only 300 replacements in 13 months is unacceptable compared to the lofty promises from the administration in January 2024.”
“I remain committed to working with the mayor on the critical issues impacting the quality of life for Troy families. Let’s work together to continue moving Troy forward.”
Council President Steele will deliver the annual Legislative Address on March 6, 2025, at 7 p.m. The address will be streamed live on the City Council’s official YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@troycitycouncil
