How to Vote

Absentee


The last day to submit an absentee ballot for the 2024 General Election is November 5th and must be received by no later than Nov 12th. To apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail, visit: absenteeballot.elections.ny.gov

Early voting in the 2024 General Election will be held from October 26th - November 3. Find your early vote location below or at: voterlookup.elections.ny.gov​​

Election Day Voting

General Election Dates & Deadlines

Voting in Person
 

  • October 26-November 3: Days of Early Voting for the General Election.

  • November 5: General Election Day.


Absentee/Early Voting by Mail

  • October 26: Last day for the board of elections to receive application or letter of application by mail or online portal for the general election ballot.

  • November 4: Last day to apply in person for general election ballot.

  • November 5: This is the last day to postmark the general election ballot. It must be received by the county board no later than November 12th.

General Election Registration Dates

  • October 26: Voter Registration Deadline for General: This is the last day the board of elections must receive an application to be eligible to vote in the general election.

  • October 21: Change of address for General: received by this date must be processed.


Military/Special Federal Voters

  • September 20: Deadline to transmit ballots eligible to Military/Special Federal/UOCAVA voters.

  • October 26: Last day for a board of elections to receive an application for Special Federal/UOCAVA absentee ballot for general by mail if NOT previously registered.

  • October 26: Last day for a board of elections to receive an application for Military absentee ballot by mail if NOT previously registered.

  • October 29: Last day for a board of elections to receive an application for Military/Special Federal absentee ballot for general by mail if previously registered.

  • November 4: Last day to apply in person for a Military absentee ballot for general if previously registered.

  • November 5: Last day to postmark Military/Special Federal/UOCAVA return ballot. Must be received by the local board of elections no later than November 18th.​​​

Registration FAQ

Qualifications to Vote:

​

 

  • You must be a United States citizen and at least 18 years old. You may pre-register at 16 or 17, but you won’t be able to vote until you are 18.

  • You must also be a resident of New York, for at least 30 days before the election. If you are changing your registration to another address within New York, you must be a resident of your respective county, city, or village for at least 20 days before the election. You must also not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

  • You must not be in prison, or be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court. Citizens on parole, probation, or other supervised release CAN register to vote.

  • If you prefer to mail in your application or do not have access to an NYS driver's license, permit, or non-driver ID card, you should complete an application to register to vote and mail it to your County or City Board of Elections. When do I need to register?

​

 

  • Whether you register in person or online, you must do so at least 10 days before Election Day.

  • If you are voting by mail, it must be received 15 days before Election Day.
